Uttarakhand Empowers BEOs, DEOs to Suspend Indisciplined Teachers; Strict Action for Intoxication, Molestation Allegations

Dehradun: The School Education Department of Uttarakhand has made comprehensive preparations to curb arbitrary behavior and indiscipline among teachers. Henceforth, teachers who violate regulations will not merely be let off with a verbal warning; instead, direct punitive action will be taken against them.

Suspension Right Away in Such Situations

According to the newly established provisions, strict action will be taken against any teacher who remains absent without having their leave approved or fails to record their attendance via the biometric system. Furthermore, in grave instances—such as being found under the influence of alcohol during school hours, or engaging in misconduct and harassment toward female students—teachers will be suspended with immediate effect.

Enhanced Official Powers

To ensure that this entire process is both rigorous and expeditious, steps have been initiated to delegate greater authority to Block Education Officers (BEOs) and District Education Officers (DEOs). Departmental officials have also been issued directives to formulate detailed regulations in this regard.

Education Minister Dr. Dhan Singh Rawat has unequivocally stated that the department is adopting a “zero-tolerance” policy regarding indiscipline and corruption. He affirmed that strict action will be ensured against offenders, and that block and district-level officials will now be empowered to initiate suspension proceedings directly.

Recent Discipline Actions

The Education Department has already begun to demonstrate the impact of its strict stance. Dhanbir Singh, the Officer-in-Charge of the Block Education Office in Doiwala, was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of ₹100,000; following this incident, the department has placed him under suspension. Meanwhile, Harpal Singh, an Assistant Teacher posted at the Government Primary School in Dirnai (within the Chakrata development block), has also been suspended for remaining absent without obtaining prior permission.
