Uttarakhand Set to Hike Electricity and Water Rates from April 1

Uttarakhand: Residents of Uttarakhand will face higher water and electricity bills starting April 1. The Uttarakhand Water Board has confirmed an annual increase in water tariffs, while the Uttarakhand Energy Corporation is preparing to implement revised electricity rates.

    Water Tariff Hike Details

As per Water Board regulations, water rates are increased annually on April 1:

    • Domestic bills: 9% increase
    • Commercial/business bills: 15% increase
    • Rural areas: Monthly bills will rise from Rs 117 to Rs 121
    • Urban areas: Average bills will increase from Rs 360 to Rs 373

Electricity Consumers to Face ‘Double Impact’

Electricity consumers may experience a two-fold increase:

    1. Annual tariff hike to be announced by the Uttarakhand Electricity Regulatory Commission (UERC) on March 31.
    2. Fuel Power Purchase Cost Adjustment (FPPCA): New rates effective in the first week of April, which have been rising steadily over the past months.

For context, electricity rates were last increased by 5.62% in 2025, with a hike of 33 paise per unit for domestic consumers.

    Possible Relief Amid Election Year

Experts suggest that domestic electricity rates may see only a modest increase, or remain stable, due to the election-year scenario. Consumers continue to bear rising monthly surcharges, so a significant relief package is being speculated.

The new electricity rates will be effective from April 1, following the release of UERC’s tariff order on March 31.
