Snowfall in Uttarakhand Mountains Increases Cold; Dense Fog to Affect Plains Over Next 3 Days

Dehradun: Snowfall in the high altitude areas of Uttarakhand over the past 24 hours has completely changed the weather. Snow fell in the upper regions of Pithoragarh and Bageshwar, including Kedarnath, Badrinath, and Hemkund Sahib, increasing the cold in the mountains. According to the IMD, light rain is expected in the hilly districts and snowfall in the higher altitude areas today, while fog and cold may worsen the situation in the plains.

Light to very light rain is possible at isolated places

According to the Meteorological Department, light to very light rain is possible at isolated places in Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh districts. Snowfall is also expected in the higher elevations of these districts, which is expected to intensify the cold in the mountains.

Meanwhile, cold day conditions may develop in Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar districts. Furthermore, a warning has been issued for dense fog in Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar, as well as the plains of Dehradun, Nainital, Champawat, and Pauri. The Meteorological Department has advised caution while driving in the morning.

Sub-Zero Temperatures in Mountain Cities

The effects of the bitter cold are clearly visible in the high-altitude areas of the state. Badrinath and Munsyari recorded a maximum temperature of minus 13 degrees Celsius, while Kedarnath recorded minus 9 degrees Celsius, Hemkund Sahib minus 8 degrees Celsius, Harsil minus 5 degrees Celsius, and Yamunotri minus 4 degrees Celsius. Yamunotri recorded a low of -13 degrees Celsius.

Although there has been no snowfall in Mussoorie yet due to which the temperature here has been recorded at 14 degrees, but the snowfall in the upper areas has increased the cold here too.

January 4: According to the Meteorological Department, dense fog is expected on Sunday in parts of Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar districts, as well as the plains of Nainital, Champawat, Pauri, and Dehradun. Visibility may be low during the morning and late evening, potentially affecting traffic.

January 5: The weather will remain largely the same on Monday. The Meteorological Department has reported that dense fog is likely to cover the plains of Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar, Nainital, Champawat, Pauri, and Dehradun. The persistent fog may cause a persistent cold effect.

January 6: On Tuesday, dense fog is expected in some areas of the plains of these districts: Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar, Nainital, Champawat, Pauri, and Dehradun. Due to poor visibility in the morning, drivers will need to exercise extra caution.

Pay attention to the advice of the Meteorological Department

Temperatures in areas like Pantnagar and New Tehri were recorded below normal. The maximum temperature in Pantnagar on Friday was 13.6 degrees Celsius, about 5 degrees below normal. The minimum temperature was 9.1 degrees Celsius, slightly above normal. Due to the low maximum temperature, the day remained cool and people felt the chill.

Chilliness increased in plain and mountainous areas

Meanwhile, the maximum temperature in New Tehri was 14.6 degrees Celsius, one degree below normal. The minimum temperature was 2.2 degrees Celsius, also below normal. Being a hilly region, the cold was felt more intensely in the morning and evening. The drop in temperature also increased the chill in both the plains and mountains.

The Meteorological Department has appealed to the public to exercise caution while driving during fog, especially in the morning. They should also wear warm clothing to protect themselves from the cold. Farmers have been advised to take necessary measures to protect their crops from frost. While the weather in the state will remain dry, fog and cold may impact public life for the next few days.
