Snowfall Likely in Uttarakhand’s High-Altitude Districts Today; Fog Alert Issued for Plains

Dehradun: Snowfall is expected in three districts of Uttarakhand today, January 6, including Uttarkashi, Chamoli, and Pithoragarh. Snowfall is also possible in areas with elevations of 2,800 meters or higher.

A yellow fog alert has been issued for the plains of Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar, Nainital, Champawat, Pauri, and Dehradun. Meanwhile, a thick layer of frost has settled in the mountains, causing rivers and streams in Gangotri, located in Uttarkashi, to freeze.

Earlier on Monday, Kedarnath witnessed heavy snowfall, bringing the temperature down to -23°C.

The first week of the year has barely ended, and winter has intensified its intensity. While there are slight hints of snowfall in the mountains, a thick blanket of fog in the plains could slow down people’s movements. The Dehradun Meteorological Center’s forecast for Tuesday clearly indicates that the coming day will be marked by cold, fog, and frost.

According to the Meteorological Centre, Dehradun, light rain and snowfall is expected in some hilly districts of the state, while a watch has been issued regarding dense fog in the plains.

There is a possibility of light rain and snowfall in these districts

According to the Meteorological Department, scattered light to very light rain or snowfall is possible in Uttarkashi, Chamoli, and Pithoragarh districts on Tuesday. Snowfall is expected in areas with elevations of 2,800 meters or higher.

This could further intensify the cold in higher altitude areas. The remaining districts of the state are expected to experience dry weather. This means there will be no rain or snowfall, but the effects of winter will persist.

Dense fog alert in plain districts

The Meteorological Department has issued a warning stating that dense fog may prevail in parts of Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar districts, as well as in the plains of Nainital, Champawat, Pauri, and Dehradun. Drivers have been advised to exercise special caution due to reduced visibility during the morning and night hours.

At the same time, scattered frost is also expected in the state’s mountainous regions on Tuesday. This could damage crops and horticulture.

Light to moderate fog is expected in Dehradun on Tuesday. The maximum temperature is expected to be around 20°C and the minimum temperature around 08°C.
