Weather Alert in Punjab & Chandigarh: Storms, Lightning and Strong Winds Expected for 3 Days

Punjab: Weather conditions across Punjab and Chandigarh are set to change significantly from today, with the Meteorological Department issuing a three-day yellow alert for storms, lightning, and strong winds.

Wind speeds are expected to range between 30 to 40 kmph, while temperatures have already dipped by 1.1 degrees in the past 24 hours, bringing them close to normal levels. The highest temperature recorded was 31.1°C in Anandpur Sahib.

    Thunderstorm Warning in 10 Districts

Light to moderate rainfall is likely at isolated places across most districts today. However, thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds reaching 50–60 kmph are expected in ten districts, including Ferozepur, Fazilka, Faridkot, Muktsar, Moga, Bathinda, Barnala, Mansa, Sangrur, and Patiala.

    Western Disturbance Behind Weather Shift

The changing weather pattern is being driven by an active western disturbance, currently persisting as an upper-air trough around 76°E and north of 32°N at an altitude of about 5.8 km. Additionally, a new western disturbance is developing as a cyclonic circulation over Iran and nearby regions. This system, active between 5.8 to 7.6 km altitude, is expected to intensify gradually.

    Fluctuations in Temperature Expected

According to Meteorological Department Director Surendra Pal, light to moderate rain will continue at isolated places across the state from March 28 to 31.

Maximum temperatures are expected to drop by 2 to 4 degrees in the next 24 hours. This will be followed by a rise of 2 to 4 degrees over the next two days, then another dip of 3 to 5 degrees, and a subsequent increase again.

On March 28, thunderstorms with winds of 30–40 kmph are likely at some places, while between March 29 and 30, stronger winds of 40–50 kmph, with gusts up to 60 kmph, may occur along with thunderstorms and lightning.
