Weather Shift in Punjab, Rain and Thunderstorms Expected Over Next Few Days

The weather has changed across Punjab and Chandigarh, with rain and cloud cover in several areas leading to a drop of around 1.2 degrees in maximum temperatures, bringing them closer to normal levels. While April 2 is expected to remain mostly dry, conditions are likely to change by the evening.

Thunderstorms, Strong Winds Likely in Coming Days

Over the next two days, the region is expected to witness thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds. Wind speeds may reach 40 to 50 km per hour, and some areas could also experience hailstorms.

The highest temperature recorded recently was 32 degrees Celsius in Ludhiana. According to the Meteorological Department, light showers may occur in parts of Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, Patiala, and Ludhiana today, although widespread rainfall is not expected. Rain activity is likely to increase across most parts of Punjab from April 3 onwards.

Recent Rainfall Above Normal in Several Districts

On April 1, many areas in Punjab received light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, with isolated hailstorms reported. The average rainfall across the state was recorded at 3.9 mm, significantly higher than the normal 0.1 mm.

At the district level, Sangrur recorded the highest average rainfall at 10.7 mm, followed by Barnala (9.8 mm) and Bathinda (9.2 mm). Some areas, including Bhadson (Patiala), Malerkotla, and Sangrur, received up to 2 cm of rain.

Rainfall levels were notably above normal in Bathinda and Faridkot, while districts such as Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, and Pathankot remained largely dry during this period.

    Western Disturbances to Influence Weather

A new Western Disturbance has developed near eastern Iran and is gradually moving toward India. This system is expected to bring moisture, resulting in increased cloud cover, rainfall, and thunderstorms across northwest India, including Punjab and Chandigarh.

Another Western Disturbance is likely to arrive on April 7, 2026, which may further intensify weather activity and increase the chances of rain in the region.

    Rain Forecast and Temperature Fluctuations

Meteorological Department Director Surendra Pal stated that rainfall is likely in many areas on April 3 and 4. Temperatures are expected to rise by 2 to 4 degrees over the next couple of days, followed by a drop of 3 to 4 degrees thereafter.

Light to moderate rainfall is also expected in some regions between April 5 and April 7, keeping weather conditions active across Punjab and nearby areas.
