West Bengal Falta Repoll: Why Fresh Voting Will Take Place in All 285 Booths, Check Dates

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has ordered fresh polling in all 285 booths of West Bengal’s Falta Assembly constituency after citing “severe electoral offences” and “subversion of the democratic process” during voting held on April 29. The decision has been taken after reviewing reports from polling officials and observers regarding irregularities during the election process.

Why Is Repoll Being Held?

The decision follows multiple complaints and reported irregularities during polling, including allegations of EVM tampering, malfunctioning of voting machines, and obstruction of opposition party agents and buttons in several booths. According to the ECI, the scale and seriousness of the reported violations raised concerns about the fairness of the election, leading to the cancellation of the entire polling exercise in the constituency.

Officials stated that ensuring free and fair elections is a top priority, and any compromise in the voting process cannot be allowed to stand. As a result, a complete repoll was ordered instead of selective booth-level re-election.

Fresh Voting Date and Timing

Repolling in all 285 booths of the Falta Assembly constituency will now take place on May 21, 2026, from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The Election Commission has directed strict security arrangements and deployment of additional forces to ensure peaceful and fair voting.

Counting Date Revised for Falta Seat

Due to the full constituency repoll, counting of votes for the Falta Assembly seat has been rescheduled to May 24, 2026, and will be conducted separately from the main West Bengal election counting process.

Political Tensions Remain High

The repoll order has intensified political tension in the constituency, with major parties trading allegations over poll malpractice and administrative lapses. Leaders from opposition parties have demanded accountability, while ruling party representatives have denied wrongdoing, calling the allegations politically motivated.
