In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote: “Looks like we’ve lost India and Russia to deepest, darkest China. May they have a long and prosperous future together!” The comment marked his sharpest public acknowledgment yet of growing cooperation among New Delhi, Moscow, and Beijing.

SCO Summit Brings Leaders Together

Chinese President Xi Jinping hosted Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin at the SCO summit, where the three leaders discussed expanding collaboration in sectors including energy, security, and trade.

All three nations maintain varying degrees of friction with Washington over issues such as the Ukraine conflict and global trade rules.

Shift in Strategic Balance

For decades, US policymakers have seen India as a potential counterweight to China’s influence in Asia. Successive Republican and Democratic administrations have invested in strengthening ties with New Delhi.

During his presidency, Trump also sought closer ties with India, sharing the stage with Modi at the 2019 “Howdy Modi” rally in Houston and reviving the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) with Japan and Australia.
