Uttar Pradesh Police have uncovered a large wood smuggling racket operating out of Bijnor district, which authorities say involves illegal timber operations and transportation. Investigations suggest the network has links extending into neighbouring Punjab, prompting a wider probe across state borders.
Police sources said that timber illegally felled in forest areas was being moved in trucks without proper permits, often masquerading as legally sourced wood. The illicit consignment was transported to various destinations in UP and further carried into Punjab markets, where demand for timber remains high.
Officials seized multiple wood consignments, vehicles and documents during recent raids and have identified key routes used by the smugglers to evade checkpoints, police said.
So far, law enforcement has arrested several suspects believed to be active members of the smuggling ring. Interrogation is underway to trace the larger criminal network’s hierarchy and financial links across states.
Police confirmed that evidence points to coordination between operators in UP and contacts in Punjab, including those who would distribute and sell the illegally sourced timber.
Authorities have noted that such smuggling activities harm forest ecosystems, disrupt wildlife habitats and undermine legal timber trade policies. Officials said strengthening coordination with Punjab police and forest departments would be essential to curb cross-border timber crime.
