Singer Zubeen Garg cremated with state honours in Guwahati

Guwahati: Singer Zubeen Garg was cremated with full state honours in Guwahati on Tuesday. His songs continued to play at the crematorium. Zubeen, 52, died on September 19 in Singapore.

Family, relatives, and close friends attended Zubeen Garg’s funeral. His wife, Garima, wept inconsolably during the funeral. Fans also sobbed. Zubeen is known for his popular songs like “Ya Ali” and “Dil Tu Hi Bata.”

It was claimed that Zubeen died while scuba diving. A complaint was subsequently filed in Assam against his manager, Siddharth Sharma, and all those present at the scene, as well as the event manager. However, on September 20th, his wife, Garima, released a tearful video from the singer’s official social media account, appealing for the complaint to be withdrawn.

Earlier, Jubeen was given a gun salute at the crematorium, while his popular songs played during the funeral.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also reached the crematorium. A second postmortem examination of Zubeen was conducted today at the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). The first one was conducted in Singapore.

Two days after Zubeen’s death, his body was flown first to Delhi on Saturday and then to Guwahati on Sunday morning by a special plane. As the convoy departed from Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport for his home in Kahilipara, thousands of fans gathered to pay their last respects.

Zubeen had gone to Singapore to participate in the North East India Festival, where he passed away.

It was claimed that the singer died in a scuba diving accident. Later, his wife, Garima, clarified that Zubeen had died from a seizure, not while scuba diving.

In an interview with The Times of India, Garima stated that on September 19th, Zubeen and seven or eight of his friends had gone to an island in Singapore on a yacht. Drummers Shekhar and Siddharth were also with them. The rest of the group was wearing life jackets, but Zubeen wasn’t. They were all swimming together when Zubeen suffered a seizure. The singer wasn’t wearing a life jacket, which is why he couldn’t be saved.
