Paris: A number of passenger flights operating in Europe were diverted, escorted and put under emergency security checks on Thursday, November 5 due to new bomb threats. This has affected several airlines including Aer Lingus, Wizz Air and LOT Polish Airlines.
Authorities have claimed all flights landed safely and there has been no discovery of any explosives. However more than a dozen flights have been targeted today.
Aer Lingus Flight Diverted
One of the biggest incidents involved an Aer Lingus Airbus A320 operating a flight from Dublin to Rome being diverted to the Évreux airport base in Normandy, France due to bomb threats.
The flight with 151 passengers and six crew members onboard landed safely. Passengers and crew were safely evacuated from the plane, and military bomb disposal units began checking the plane, according to the office of France’s Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu.
The French Air Force sent planes to escort the passenger jet to the airport. The plane was seen changing course near Paris, according to flight tracking data.
Wizz Air and LOT Targeted
A Wizz Air flight operating from Milan to Warsaw was diverted to Vienna due to a threat received, according to a spokesman for the airline, as reported by Associated Press.
LOT Polish Airlines flight from Warsaw to Paris was also halted and re-routed to a stand to undergo security checks. No dangerous items were found, authorities said.
Bulgaria also reported three planes carrying out emergency landings due to bomb threats. Two flights from Copenhagen and Madrid landed in Sofia. Another flight from London landed in Plovdiv.
Bomb Threats Affect Flights Earlier This Week
The latest incidents come after several similar incidents were reported on November 3.
LOT Polish Airlines, Scandinavian Airlines, Wizz Air and Ryanair were all affected. At least seven flights were targeted. This caused some disruption at airports. Warsaw’s Modlin airport had to be temporarily closed.
Some planes were escorted by fighter jets and passengers, crew and luggage were put under security checks. Ryanair was one of the airlines affected with several flights.
London’s Metropolitan Police also received threats about four planes at Heathrow Airport.
No explosives were found during these searches. It is unknown who is responsible for the threats and if they are linked.
Concern Over European Aviation Security
The constant threats have caused concern about security in Europe. Airlines, airports and security services have taken precautionary steps.
No explosives have been found since these threats were reported but flights have been diverted, planes have made emergency landings and extra security checks have been carried out.
Investigations are ongoing to find out who is responsible for the threats. It has not been confirmed if they are part of a coordinated operation.
