Washington: Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has reacted to the results of the November 3 midterm elections in the US. He said the election results clearly show that the American people do not want war and have declared their opposition to conflict.
Reacting on the social media platform X, Ghalibaf wrote, “Whether it’s a call of conscience or the impact of the rising cost of living, Americans have declared their opposition to war, and we support this message. If the US government betrays the will of its people in favor of the interests of international pressure agents and blackmailers, it will receive a resounding ‘no’ from us.”
His comments come as the Democratic Party appears to be strengthening its position in both houses of Congress in the November 3 midterm election vote count. Voting took place for all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 in the Senate.
Economic concerns and foreign policy issues, particularly the ongoing military conflict with Iran, influenced voter sentiment. The results indicate a shift in the balance of power in Washington, potentially weakening the Republican Party’s legislative grip.
Trump congratulates Democrats on victory, expresses willingness to work together
Following the Republican Party’s setback in the midterm elections, President Donald Trump congratulated the Democratic Party on its victory. He expressed his willingness to work with the opposition party in the national interest. However, he also attributed the Republican candidates’ defeat to his own failure to contest the elections.
In a phone interview with CBS News, Trump said he was excited to work with Democrats. “My message is: congratulations to the Democrats. I look forward to working with you for the good of our country.”
Regarding cooperation with the opposition, Trump said that he knows many Democratic leaders and that, as president, he has full veto power. He hopes the two sides can reach an agreement.
However, he also warned that if Democrats don’t cooperate, he could veto bills passed by them. Trump said, “I think they’ll want to work with me. Otherwise, I’ll veto everything, and they won’t want that.”
Trump said, “Republicans would have won if I had run.”
Reacting to the Republican Party’s defeat in the election, Trump defended himself. He repeatedly claimed that if he had run himself, the party would have performed better.
In an interview with CBS News, he said, “I feel like I wasn’t a candidate and couldn’t have done anything about it. If I had run, we would have won.”
Trump also blamed the Republican candidates’ low popularity and his personal relationships with some of the candidates for their defeat. He said that some candidates were not liked by voters, while others were not his supporters. This is why their supporters also distanced themselves from those candidates.
Trump claimed that if he had been in the election, the Republican candidates would have easily won and his supporters would have voted for him in large numbers.
When asked if he was disappointed with the election results, Trump said that he had made significant efforts to ensure the Republican candidates’ victory, but was unsuccessful. He said that he had tried his best and left no stone unturned.
Democrats’ Lead Could Increase Surveillance of the Trump Administration
According to the American media network CNN, the Democratic Party has taken advantage of voter sentiment and gained a significant lead in the election. This could make it difficult for President Trump to make legislative decisions during the remaining two years of his term.
A Democratic majority in the House of Representatives could give them greater power to investigate the presidential administration through various committees, hold hearings, and issue subpoenas. At the same time, gaining control of the Senate will also increase his influence over the legislative process and presidential appointments.
Reacting to the election results, Trump shared a photo of a red MAGA hat with the word “VETO” written on it on his social media platform, Truth Social. This indicated that he could exercise the presidential veto power over bills passed by the Democratic-majority Congress.
In another post, he wrote that he would publicly analyze the election results and explain why the candidates won or lost.
In a separate interview with The New York Times, Trump expressed his willingness to accept the election results and work with Democrats.
Democrats also achieved success in Republican strongholds like Texas and South Carolina
In this election, the Democratic Party also gained in states traditionally considered strongholds of the Republican Party.
Democrats also strengthened their position in Texas and South Carolina. Additionally, the party secured a historic victory in the Kansas Senate elections, ending the Republican Party’s nearly century-long dominance in the state.
