New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the police action involving climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was shifted from the Jantar Mantar protest site to Safdarjung Hospital following health concerns.

In a video message shared on social media platform X, Kejriwal accused the government of handling the protest improperly and urged the Prime Minister not to act with “arrogance.” He said history has shown that excessive use of power has consequences.

Kejriwal questions police action

Kejriwal alleged that Wangchuk was removed from the protest site in an inappropriate manner and claimed that his supporters were mistreated during the action.

He compared Wangchuk’s hunger strike with Mahatma Gandhi’s fasts during the freedom movement and questioned the government’s response to protesters raising concerns over the education system.

The AAP leader said Wangchuk and student protesters were demanding reforms related to examination systems and an end to alleged paper leaks, rather than making unreasonable demands.

Police cite health concerns and court directions

Wangchuk was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital after a prolonged hunger strike over alleged irregularities in the examination system, including the NEET paper leak controversy.

Hospital officials said Wangchuk was stable but showed signs of weakness and mild dehydration due to extended fasting. Doctors said he was under continuous medical observation.

Delhi Police said the decision to shift Wangchuk was taken following Delhi High Court directions and medical advice due to concerns over his deteriorating health. Police officials said they exercised maximum restraint during the operation.

Opposition leaders criticise action

The police action has drawn criticism from several Opposition leaders, including representatives of the Congress, Samajwadi Party and Trinamool Congress.

Meanwhile, members of left-wing student organisations joined the protest at Jantar Mantar. Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke announced that the protest would continue and said he would begin an indefinite hunger strike.

Wangchuk has been on a hunger strike demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged examination irregularities.
