Lucknow Ranked 58th Most Polluted City Worldwide

Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh (UP), has been ranked as the 58th most polluted city in the world in terms of air quality, according to the latest data from global pollution tracking agencies. The ranking highlights the severe air quality challenges faced by the city, particularly during winter and post‑harvest seasons when smog and particulate matter concentrate in the atmosphere.

    UP Dominates Global Pollution List

A total of 11 cities from Uttar Pradesh have made it into the top 100 most polluted urban areas globally, underscoring the persistent air quality issues across the state. This includes both major cities and smaller urban centers that struggle with emissions from traffic, industry, construction, crop burning, and other sources.

    Health Risks, Especially for Children

Officials and health experts are raising concerns over the impact of poor air quality on public health — especially among vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and people with respiratory conditions. Air pollutants like PM2.5 and PM10, which are the focus of the global ranking, can penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream, increasing the risk of asthma, bronchitis, heart disease and other serious conditions. Parents and health professionals warn that long‑term exposure may affect children’s lung development and overall well‑being.

    Pollution Peaks in Winter Months

Lucknow and other UP cities typically see their worst air quality readings between November and February, driven by:

    • Vehicular emissions
    • Industrial activity
    • Construction dust
    • Seasonal crop stubble burning in nearby agricultural regions
    • Weather conditions that trap pollutants close to the ground

These factors combine to create dense smog that can persist for days.

    Calls for Action Intensify

Environmentalists and local activists are urging authorities to take stronger measures to combat air pollution, including:

    • Banning open burning of agricultural waste
    • Enhancing public transport options
    • Restricting emission‑intensive industries near residential zones
    • Implementing stricter vehicle emission standards

There are also calls for public awareness campaigns about protective measures, such as wearing masks and avoiding outdoor activity when pollution levels are high.
