Mohali Woman Alleges NRI Husband Abandoned Her Five Days After Wedding; Police Register Case
August 2, 2026
Chandigarh: A Mohali woman has accused her Canada-based NRI husband of abandoning her just five days after their wedding, taking her jewellery on the promise of calling her to Canada, and later cutting off all communication. Based on her complaint, the Mohali Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation.
According to the complainant, she married Apramapar Singh, a resident of Shahpur Kandi in Pathankot who is settled in Canada, on February 26, 2023. She alleged that her family spent around ₹12 lakh on the wedding and gifted 12 tolas of gold, clothes and other customary gifts as part of the marriage.
Husband Returned to Canada Days After Wedding
The woman alleged that her husband returned to Canada on March 3, 2023, just five days after the wedding, while she stayed back at her in-laws’ house. She claimed that her mother-in-law was also living in Canada, leaving her to care for her father-in-law, who was undergoing treatment for cancer.
According to the complaint, she looked after her father-in-law until his death. When her husband returned to India for the last rites, he stayed for nearly two weeks before leaving for Canada again.
Before departing, he allegedly convinced her to hand over all her jewellery, assuring her that it would be safer with him and promising to arrange her travel to Canada soon.
Woman Alleges Husband Blocked Her and Stopped Contact
The complainant alleged that after returning to Canada, her husband’s behaviour changed completely. She claimed that he gradually stopped answering her calls and messages before blocking her phone number altogether.
She further alleged that whenever she tried contacting him through another number, he either blocked that number as well or changed his contact details.
The woman also claimed that her mother-in-law initially encouraged her to remain in touch with her husband but later advised her to move on and remarry, saying she had severed ties with her son.
Police Launch Investigation
The complainant further alleged that she is currently living at a relative’s house and fears being asked to vacate. She also suspects that her husband may have remarried in Canada and has a child there.
Police have clarified that these allegations are part of the complaint and are being verified during the investigation.
Based on the woman’s complaint, the Mohali Police have registered a case against the accused NRI husband under relevant legal provisions. Officials said the investigation is underway, and further action will be taken based on the evidence collected.
