An open manhole has claimed another life amidst the monsoon in Mumbai. A manhole, left uncovered during drainage line repairs in the Sakinaka area, proved fatal for 55-year-old Aslam Ishaq Shaikh. Following the incident, the police registered a case against the contractor and the workers involved in the repair work. Meanwhile, viewing the matter seriously, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has suspended four officials and initiated a high-level inquiry into the entire incident.
Aslam Ishaq Shaikh was a resident of Yadav Nagar in Sakinaka. According to the police, drainage line repair work was underway on Khairani Road. During this process, employees of a private contractor had removed the manhole cover. Preliminary investigations revealed that Aslam was walking past while talking on his mobile phone and failed to notice the open manhole; he fell into it almost instantly. Although the workers attempted to rescue him, he was swept away by the strong current. He was later located after the next manhole was opened and was pulled out in an unconscious state, but doctors at the hospital declared him dead.
Have signs of negligence emerged in the police investigation?
The police stated that a case has been registered against the contractor and the workers involved in the repairs following the incident. The investigation is examining whether safety protocols were followed. According to the fire department, a rescue operation was launched immediately upon receiving the information, but the strong water flow in the drainage system posed significant challenges to the relief efforts. The police are also investigating whether adequate safety measures—such as warning boards and barricading—were in place at the work site.
What aspects are the police investigating?
The police are conducting a detailed investigation to determine at what level negligence occurred leading to the accident. Further legal action against the contractor, the concerned workers, and responsible officials will be taken once the investigation report is submitted. Meanwhile, this incident has once again raised serious questions regarding ongoing development work, open manholes, and public safety in Mumbai during the monsoon. Local residents are demanding strict adherence to safety standards during repair work to prevent the recurrence of such tragic incidents in the future.
