PM Modi to Visit Flood-Hit Punjab and Himachal Amid Severe Crisis on Sept 9: Sources

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Punjab and Himachal Pradesh to assess the devastating flood situation that has claimed several lives. In Punjab, the situation intensified, with at least 43 lives lost and over 1,900 villages across 23 districts, government sources confirmed.

Accordingly, the state of Himachal Pradesh has been grappling with cloudbursts and landslides across its various districts.

The visit, scheduled in response to one of the worst flood crises in decades, aims to review ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts in the state, which has been battered by relentless monsoon rains. No official date for the visit has been announced yet.

Flood Crises in Punjab

Punjab has been grappling with unprecedented flooding, with rivers such as the Sutlej, Beas, Ravi, and Ghaggar breaching danger levels, submerging nearly 1.71 lakh hectares of farmland and displacing thousands. The state recorded 253.7 mm of rainfall in August, 74% above normal, marking the highest in 25 years. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has described the crisis as the “worst floods in recent history,” with over 3.5 lakh people affected and extensive damage to infrastructure, including 101 km of PWD link roads and 141 schools.

Sources indicate that PM Modi, who recently returned from China, has already engaged with CM Mann, assuring full central support during a call on September 1. Mann had previously written to the Prime Minister, requesting the release of Rs 60,000 crore in pending state funds to aid relief efforts and proposing Rs 50,000 per acre as compensation for affected farmers. Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who visited Punjab on September 4, is preparing a detailed damage assessment report for the Prime Minister.
