New Delhi: Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav, currently lodged in Tihar Jail over a long‑running ₹9‑crore cheque bounce and debt case, faced a crucial bail hearing in the Delhi High Court on Monday. The court set a strict deadline of 3 PM for Yadav’s legal team to deposit ₹1.5 crore as a condition for granting interim bail. If the amount is not paid by the deadline, the hearing will be adjourned and the matter taken up again.
The case stems from multiple cheque dishonour cases tied to credits obtained by Yadav in 2010 for his directorial debut Ata Pata Laapata. The loan and unpaid dues — reportedly amounting to nearly ₹9 crore after interest and penalties led to legal escalation and convictions under the Negotiable Instruments Act. Yadav surrendered to authorities at Tihar Jail earlier this month after earlier efforts to obtain extensions were denied.
During the February 16 hearing, the Delhi High Court made it clear that interim bail would be considered only if a demand draft (DD) of ₹1.5 crore was submitted by 3 PM the same day. The condition was imposed as part of strict financial terms to release Yadav temporarily while his application remains under consideration. Previous deposits include sums already paid by the actor under court direction, reducing the remaining amount required for interim relief.
Yadav’s legal team submitted the bail plea partially to allow the actor to attend a family wedding, scheduled for later in the month. However, the court reiterated that complying with its financial terms was essential before granting any temporary release.
The case has drawn public support from within the film fraternity. Prominent Bollywood figures such as Sonu Sood, Salman Khan, and Ajay Devgn have been reported to offer help to Yadav amid his financial troubles, with some publicly expressing hope for a positive outcome.
As of the afternoon hearing, Yadav remained in judicial custody awaiting compliance with the court’s mandate. The High Court’s demand for the ₹1.5 crore payment by 3 PM will be decisive in whether interim bail is granted immediately or whether the matter continues in further hearings.
