New Delhi: Indian businesses are bracing for major disruptions following U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of a 25% tariff on all Indian exports to the United States, effective August 1.

The move, part of Trump’s broader pressure campaign over India’s energy and defense ties with Russia, is expected to severely impact key sectors of the Indian economy.

Tariff Includes Penalty Over Russian Ties

The tariff announcement also includes an unspecified penalty linked to India’s continued import of Russian crude oil and defense equipment. This marks a sharp escalation in trade tensions between the two countries, which have already seen stalled negotiations over market access and tariff reciprocity.

Key Sectors in the Crosshairs

Export-heavy sectors such as textiles, ceramics, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and electronics are expected to bear the brunt of the new duties. Gujarat’s ceramic and chemical exporters have already raised concerns over losing cost competitiveness. The apparel industry, one of India’s largest employment generators, is also facing possible contraction due to diminished access to U.S. buyers.

Estimated $7–10 Billion Annual Loss

Industry estimates suggest the tariff could cause Indian exporters to lose between $7 billion and $10 billion annually. Trade bodies, including FICCI, have termed the move “deeply disappointing” and urged both governments to revive stalled trade talks.

Risk to India’s Role in Global Supply Chains

Trade analysts warn that the new tariff could undermine India’s status as a preferred destination in the “China-plus-one” strategy. While India remains strategically positioned in global manufacturing networks, rising trade barriers may deter future foreign investment.

The Indian government has not yet issued a formal response but is reportedly reviewing its trade and tariff policy. Sources suggest the possibility of retaliatory measures is under consideration.

Trump’s announcement follows earlier remarks where he criticized India’s economy as “overprotected” and condemned its growing energy cooperation with Russia. The new tariffs add to a series of unresolved trade disputes and could widen the diplomatic divide between New Delhi and Washington.
