For years, the Samajwadi Party’s electoral identity in Uttar Pradesh was closely linked to the Muslim-Yadav, or MY, combination. But ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, Akhilesh Yadav appears to be trying to expand that formula — and this time, women are at the centre of the strategy.
And one of the most visible faces of that outreach is Dimple Yadav.
The bigger question is: Is Dimple simply being used to connect with women voters, or is the SP preparing a much larger political role for her?
Why Dimple Yadav Matters Now
Dimple Yadav has been an MP for 14 years and, according to recent political analysis, her role inside the SP has changed significantly. From maintaining a relatively low public profile, she has increasingly appeared at protests, meetings, press conferences and public programmes.
Her appeal also gives the SP something it has often struggled with — a softer political image.
The party has faced criticism over the years for being seen by opponents as aggressive or associated with law-and-order concerns during its earlier governments. Dimple’s relatively calm and approachable public persona allows the SP to present a different image, particularly to women and families.
Women: The New Electoral Battleground
Women are increasingly becoming a decisive electoral constituency in Uttar Pradesh.
According to Election Commission data, women accounted for about 45.5 per cent of the state’s electorate in 2026, making them almost half of the voter base. In the 2024 Lok Sabha election, female voter turnout in Uttar Pradesh was 58.56 per cent, compared with 53.47 per cent for men.
For the SP, this makes women voters too important to ignore.
Akhilesh Yadav has already announced a major promise aimed at women: ₹40,000 annually for eligible women under the proposed Stree Samman Samriddhi Yojana if the party returns to power. The party has also announced free laptops for girls clearing Class 12 and free bus and metro travel for girl students.
And the messaging is not coming from Akhilesh alone. Dimple has been given a prominent role in presenting the party’s women-focused agenda.
From MY to PDA Plus ‘Mahila’
The SP is not abandoning its PDA strategy either.
PDA stands for Pichhda, Dalit and Alpsankhyak — backward classes, Dalits and minorities. The party is trying to expand this coalition beyond its traditional Muslim-Yadav base.
The strategy includes greater representation for Dalits. Reports say the SP is planning to field around 100 Dalit and tribal candidates in the 2027 Assembly election, including candidates in some general constituencies.
The party is also trying to reach non-Yadav OBC communities, including groups that have traditionally supported BJP allies.
In this broader calculation, women become another important layer.
This is where the emerging “M” factor comes in — Mahila, Musalman and Muddas, or women, Muslims and issues — a formulation highlighted in recent analysis of the SP’s 2027 strategy.
Is Dimple the Chief Ministerial Face?
This is where the political speculation becomes interesting.
In August, questions about whether Dimple could become the SP’s chief ministerial face in 2027 began gaining attention after Akhilesh was asked about the possibility. His response did not clearly announce Dimple as the party’s CM candidate, but it also did not shut down the speculation.
Some reports subsequently interpreted his remarks as a possible signal that Dimple could be projected for the top post. However, there is no clear formal announcement from the Samajwadi Party naming Dimple Yadav as its 2027 chief ministerial candidate.
For now, Akhilesh remains the party’s national president and its central political face.
So, Dimple’s growing prominence should not automatically be read as a leadership replacement.
What Is the SP’s Larger 2027 Strategy?
The strategy appears to have several layers.
First, expand the social coalition beyond the traditional MY base through PDA, Dalit outreach and attempts to attract non-Yadav OBC voters.
Second, build a women-focused vote bank through welfare promises, education, transport and direct outreach.
Third, change the party’s image. Dimple’s softer persona, along with Akhilesh’s efforts to project a more development-oriented and solution-focused politics, are part of this makeover.
And fourth, build on the momentum of the 2024 Lok Sabha election, when the SP won 37 seats in Uttar Pradesh — its best-ever performance in a Lok Sabha election in the state.
The BJP, meanwhile, is already working to recover ground lost in 2024. Recent political reporting shows Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath increasing his outreach across the state ahead of the 2027 contest.
So the 2027 battle is not simply about Akhilesh versus Yogi.
For the SP, it is also about whether a new combination — PDA plus women, welfare promises and a softer public image with Dimple Yadav at the forefront — can turn the party’s 2024 momentum into an Assembly victory.
