The Punjab government has intensified action against gangs involved in forcing children into begging and human trafficking. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann a special campaign is being carried out with the aim of making Punjab a “Beggar-Free Punjab.” As part of this initiative, a DNA testing campaign has been launched to identify and protect children found begging on streets and at public places.
704 Children Rescued Under the Project
According to the Punjab government, 704 children have so far been rescued from the clutches of gangs under Project Jeevanjot and Jeevanjot 2.0. The objective of the campaign is not only to remove children from the streets but also to identify their biological families and provide them with a safe environment. The punjab government said several children have been reunited with their families, while the process of enrolling some children in schools and Anganwadi centres has also been initiated.
DNA Tests to Verify Family Relationships
An important part of the campaign is DNA matching of children with adults accompanying them. The purpose is to determine whether the person accompanying a child is actually their parent or another family member. If the DNA test does not establish the claimed relationship, an FIR is registered against the concerned person and legal action is initiated. According to the punjab government, several cases related to child trafficking and exploitation have also been detected during this process.
Special Drives at Bus Stands and Railway Stations
Special raids and rescue operations are being conducted at major public places across the state to free children from begging. These include bus stands, railway stations and other important public locations. Along with shifting children to safe places, the campaign also focuses on their families, education and future.
Punjab Government Appeals to the Public
CM Bhagwant Singh Mann has said that ensuring a safe environment and education for every child is the responsibility of the punjab government. The Punjab government has stated that action against child exploitation and trafficking will continue. The Punjab government has appealed to people not to give money to children or others begging on the streets. If anyone spots a child begging, they have been urged to immediately report it to the Child Helpline at 1098, so that the concerned agencies can take action to rescue and protect the child.
Focus on Child Protection
Through Project Jeevanjot 2.0, the Punjab government is focusing on bringing children out of begging and connecting them with their families, education and a safe future. DNA verification, rescue operations and legal action have been made key components of the campaign.
